Freedom Dreaming

Today was the last day of school.
It is not enough to describe this year as strange, and it is hard to synthesize my thoughts so close to end of my time with a lovely group of learners and educators.
As always, I am all about trying.

After finishing the last day of an in-person school year interrupted and multiple daily Zoom meetings
after remembering the Love Parade we had as a class and experiencing the sincerity with which some of my learners want to change the world
after listening to striking words from brilliant, magical Black female minds about what is possible
and NECESSARY
here are just some simple thoughts and question that are swirling in my mind:

-Feeling is not enough. We need to act. I need to act. The world of education HAS to change, and I have already started thinking about the ways in which I want to be a part of that change. The ways in which I demand that change.

-What are the hard questions I have to keep asking myself about my own practices and colonizations that will help me better do the self-work, not self-centered work, to dismantle oppressive systems in schools?

What does freedom dreaming look like for me? What are the kinds of things I have enough imagination to consider for all ALL all students in our world?

What is my superpower and how will I harness it?

-To be an abolitionist educator doesn’t mean that I doing it right all the time. I have so much to learn but I am focused on that learning. To me, it means a reimagine, a redo, a push for humanity for ALL.

HUMANITY FOR ALL.

-Will there be a time when “humanity for all” doesn’t seem like it won’t happen in my lifetime?

What are the ways in which I will recharge over the summer, allowing my mindbodysoul to rest as a form of resistance, and steel myself for the year ahead?

  • You inspire me endlessly. I am always in awe of the creative ways you teach your students about social justice and other important values. I can’t wait to see what you do in the future!
